Why Whiten Your Teeth?
We all want to look good, we want to impress, and we want people to compliment us. Having a bright white smile is one way of getting those compliments. Your teeth are the first place we look when we are having a conversation in a group setting or in a one-on-one situation. We are all so paranoid about what people think of us we are happy to spend a lot of money to achieve the right look including whitening our teeth. It can be quite uncomfortable talking to someone who has badly stained teeth, you don’t know where to look, you try not to look at the other persons teeth, and they feel uncomfortable because they are very much aware of how you are trying to avoid eye contact with your mouth!
Charcoal
Charcoal is a common natural remedy people use to whiten their teeth. It seems a bit weird to think you can rub something that can be messy and such a strong colour onto your teeth and expect to see results, but it works! The abrasiveness of the charcoal rubbing on your teeth eats into the stains. All you have to do is rub it onto your teeth avoiding your gums, let is sit for a bit and rinse your mouth out. There are many ways of using charcoal including toothpaste, powder or just as it comes naturally, if you don’t like the taste the toothpaste and powder come in a variety of flavours to make the experience more enjoyable. It is recommended this process be done perhaps once a month to keep your teeth looking clean and white.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a good option to try because it is not very abrasive so its gentle on your teeth but still removes stains from the surface of your teeth. It’s not surprising baking soda can be used for this as it has so many other uses from antacid to decrease the acidity of your stomach to the manufacture of fire extinguishes to baking a cake! Baking soda is alkaline and salty which helps lighten acid-based food stains. The process is simple mix the same amount of baking powder with water until it forms a paste, put your toothbrush into the mixture until you have enough on your brush then brush your teeth as you would normally making sure to cover all of your teeth. Leave it for a minute and then rinse, baking soda does not have a very nice taste and is very salty so make sure to have a glass of water with you to give your mouth a thorough rinse when you have finished. It is recommended you can brush your teeth daily with a small amount of baking powder.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can be used to whiten your teeth but only in very small doses. This product has a lot of uses from household cleaning, washing your hair to preserving food. The easiest way to use it to whiten your teeth is to simply make a mouth wash using two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with six ounces of water. Swish this mixture around in your mouth like a mouth wash for about thirty seconds and then rinse your mouth out and brush your teeth. It is not recommended you use apple cider vinegar everyday to clean your teeth perhaps limit it to a once-a-month process.
Lemon Orange or Banana Peel
It is believed that the peel of a lemon orange or banana is good for whitening your teeth. There is no scientific proof this process works but it is a well-known natural way to whiten your teeth. The peel of these fruits has the compound d-limonene and/or acidic acid which some people believe can whiten your teeth. Simply rub the peel on your teeth quite vigorously and then rinse, this is not harmful at all for your teeth and gums and so can be done on a regular basis.
Coconut Oil Pulling
Until I started researching this topic, I had not heard of this as a natural way to whiten your teeth. Coconut oil is used for a number of things from protecting your skin from the sun to relieving irritation from eczema to increasing your metabolism. Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids like Capric acid, Caprylic acid and compound lauric acid. These are saturated fats. Simply swish one to two teaspoons of the oil around in your mouth spit out and rinse your mouth thoroughly afterwards, it’s a good idea to then brush your teeth with a toothpaste to get the taste of the oil from your mouth.
Hydrogen peroxide
This is another natural option to whiten your teeth but you must be very careful with this option. When this product is used very carefully it can be a great way to whiten your teeth. You must be sure to use the correct concentration and be sure to not over use this product, if you have sensitive gums then this is probably not the best option for you. I would suggest instead using an at home teeth whitening kit. These kits do contain hydrogen peroxide but only at a minimal amount and there are also peroxide free kits which use all natural products. An at home teeth whitening kit is safe and easy to use. Simply place the suppled hydrogen peroxide on your teeth via a gel pen or mouth guard and place the LED light on your teeth for the correct amount of time and you will be pleasantly surprised with the results. Most people see a change in the colour of their teeth after one use.
